For over a decade, the Compass Run for Food in Mono, Ontario, has united runners, walkers, and community advocates in a shared mission: combating local food insecurity. This annual event, held each fall, combines fitness with philanthropy, channeling 100% of its proceeds to area food banks and hunger-relief programs. While the run itself is a highlight for many, the heart of its success lies in the unwavering support of longtime sponsors like Shady Oaks Landscaping, which has stood by the event since its inception 12 years ago.
A Race with Purpose
he Compass Run for Food isn’t just a race—it’s a lifeline. Participants can choose between a 5K, 10K, or a family-friendly 1K fun run, ensuring accessibility for all ages and fitness levels. What sets it apart is its direct impact: every registration fee, donation, and sponsored dollar goes toward stocking shelves at local food banks, providing meals for families, and supporting nutrition programs in schools. Over the years, the event has raised over $250,000 and collected tens of thousands of pounds of food, a testament to its grassroots power.
Silver Sponsor: Shady Oaks Landscaping
Shady Oaks Landscaping, a Dufferin County-based company renowned for its eco-conscious designs and community spirit, has been the event’s cornerstone sponsor since year one.
“Supporting a food drive is deeply important to us because it reflects our core values of community and compassion,” says Steve Prins, owner of Shady Oaks Landscaping. “As a business, we believe in giving back and ensuring that no one in our community goes hungry. A food drive allows us to make a visible and meaningful impact, bring people together for a common cause, and help create a stronger, more supportive environment for everyone. It’s more than a charitable act—it’s a responsibility we proudly embrace.”

The company’s involvement has also helped the event scale sustainably. In 2023, the event introduced a “virtual run” option, expanding participation to out-of-town supporters. Shady Oaks has also helped sponsor the event’s zero-waste initiatives, ensuring compostable materials and recycling stations are available.
Legacy of Impact
The partnership has yielded tangible results. In 2024, the Compass Run saw a record 800 participants and raised $45,000, enough to provide 90,000 meals through the Mono Community Food Bank and neighbouring organizations. Annual sponsors like Shady Oaks, with their consistent backing, have enabled organizers to keep costs low, maximizing donations for those in need.
Compass Run 2025
This year’s event will take place on June 14th, 2025. Participants can register online in advance to run together on June 14 or complete the race virtually, anywhere, anytime in June. The course winds through groomed trails that loop scenic Island Lake in Orangeville, offering a picturesque backdrop for runners and walkers alike.
